How to Figure Out if Moderate Drinking Is Too Risky for You

An alarming one in three American adults has high blood pressure. Known medically as hypertension, many people don’t even know they have it, because high blood pressure has no symptoms or warning signs. But when elevated blood pressure is accompanied by abnormal cholesterol and blood sugar levels, the damage to your arteries, kidneys, moderate drinking and heart accelerates exponentially. In the Special Health Report, Controlling Your Blood Pressure, find out how to keep blood pressure in a healthy range simply by making lifestyle changes, such as losing weight, increasing activity, and eating more healthfully. Hormones may also impact the rate at which alcohol is metabolized.

Patterns of Drinking Associated with Alcohol Use Disorder:

  • They found that light-to-moderate drinkers had a lower risk of major cardiovascular events, taking into account genetic, clinical, lifestyle and socioeconomic factors.
  • Quite a bit of attention has been given to the fact that red wine seems to be particularly beneficial.
  • One reason that might explain the link between moderate drinking and lower mortality risk seen in some studies, the authors said, is that light and moderate drinkers tend to be healthier than abstainers.
  • Another study, however, may ask questions about alcohol consumption and alcohol problems without including specific diagnostic criteria, and thus a diagnosis cannot be made.

Results from these two surveys may report different numbers of abstainers, not because of true differences in drinking practices but because of definitional differences. In recent years, the alcoholic beverage market has become even more diversified. For example, beverages such as “ light” beer, “ light” wines, and wine or spirit coolers, which have slightly lower alcohol contents than the corresponding regular beverages, have been introduced.

For women, this typically happens after about four drinks in two hours. The opposite of moderate drinking is either heavy drinking or binge drinking. The active ingredient in alcoholic beverages, a simple molecule called ethanol, affects the body in many different ways. It directly influences the stomach, brain, heart, gallbladder, and liver. It affects levels of lipids (cholesterol and triglycerides) and insulin in the blood, as well as inflammation and coagulation.

  • The opposite of moderate drinking is either heavy drinking or binge drinking.
  • A drink is 12 ounces (355 milliliters) of beer, 5 ounces (148 milliliters) of wine or 1.5 ounces (44 milliliters) of 80-proof distilled spirits.
  • For example, treatment providers base various treatment decisions on the drinking-behavior information provided by patients.

A look at diastolic blood pressure

I have seen the terrible toll of alcohol use disorder and know the risks. Mirza Rahman, MD, president of the American College of Preventive Medicine, said that good health behavior in areas such as diet, exercise, and sleep may not be enough to reduce the negative impact of moderate drinking. Large studies published in the past several years, he said, have established that no level of drinking is safe. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has created public health guidelines for U.S. adults. Binge drinking is behavior that raises blood alcohol levels to 0.08%. That usually means four or more drinks within two hours for women and five or more drinks within two hours for men.
